Looking at world events through the lens of the Word of God, let’s look at some headlines from today’s news that point to the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
First, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to The Times of Israel, a top Iranian general told a Kuwaiti newspaper that Iran has established rocket factories in Lebanon that are under the full control of the Hezbollah terror group. Citing one of the deputy heads of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, the newspaper reported that Iran in recent months has established factories for manufacturing both rockets and firearms in Lebanon. The report came just days after Iran’s Defense Minister said Hezbollah is now capable of producing rockets that can hit any part of Israel.
Second, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Reuters, Syrian President Bashar Assad says President Trump has so far failed to show “anything concrete” toward his pledge to defeat the Islamic State terror group and calls U.S. forces inside his country “invaders.” He told interviewers, “We haven’t seen anything concrete yet. But we have hopes that this administration is going to implement what we have heard.” Trump won the presidency in large part on his promise to defeat ISIS. And upon taking office in late January, he ordered his top military leaders to present, within 30 days, a new draft plan to dismantle the terror group. However, it is unclear whether or not they have delivered that report. Assad also said the U.S.-backed military effort against ISIS in Syria has so far amounted to “only a few raids.”
Third, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Reuters, As the USS Carl Vinson plowed through seas off South Korea on Tuesday, rival North Korea warned the United States of “merciless” attacks if the carrier infringes on its sovereignty or dignity during U.S.-South Korean drills. F-18 fighter jets took off from the flight deck of the nuclear-powered carrier in a dramatic display of U.S. firepower amid rising tension with the North, which has alarmed its neighbors with two nuclear tests and a series of missile launches since last year. North Korea said the arrival of the U.S. strike group in the seas off the east of the Korean peninsula was part of a “reckless scheme” to attack it.

With the words “and I saw” in Revelation 15:1, we are again reminded of the visual nature of this material. John keeps writing as fast as he can observe the ever-changing events. He refers to this one as “another sign in heaven,” following the previous sign of the woman and the Dragon. This third sign is called “great and marvelous.” This destination may refer to the ominous and terrible finality of what is about to transpire — both for the earth and for all mankind.
The seven angels may be the same ones who sounded the trumpets in Revelation 8:2. But the absence of any definite article may indicate these are the seven angels that have previously not appeared. They appear seven times as a group from this period onward. These seven angels are said to have “seven plagues, which are the last.” The term “plague” appears 15 times in Revelation, always in an eschatological sense. The term “the last” is the basis of our word “eschatology,” the study of last things.
These angels are pictured holding seven “vials” or “bowls.” The imagery may be drawn from Isaiah 51:17, which says to Jerusalem, “Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.” Beasley-Murray points out that the Hebrew word used in Isaiah means “cup” or “goblet” and better defines the term use in the Revelation.
In closing, let’s consider what God wants you and me to do in light of His Second Coming.
Jesus Christ said in Luke 19:13 to “Occupy till I come.” In light of that, we are continuing our journey through the book, “Coming Events and Present Duties,” by J.C. Ryle. It is a collection of what he called “prophetical tracts” that focus on the believer’s duty in light of the signs which point to the second coming of Jesus Christ.
This section is titled, “Occupy Until I Come!” (Part 13) based on the parable of the nobleman who went away and left talents for his servants to use in his absence. J.C. Ryle writes:
Alas, for the man who expects a millennium before the Lord Jesus returns! How can this possibly be, if the world in the day of His coming is to be found as it was in the days of Noah and Lot?
Know these things clearly, and then you will not be confounded and surprised by the continuance of immense evils in the world. Wars, and tumults, and oppression, and dishonesty, and selfishness, and covetousness, and superstition, and bad government, and abounding heresies — will not appear unusual to you. You will not sink down into a morbid, misanthropic condition of mind — when you see laws, and reforms, and education, not making mankind perfect. You will not relapse into a state of apathy and disgust — when you see Churches full of imperfections, and theologians making mistakes. You will say to yourself, “The time of Christ’s power has not yet arrived. The devil is still working among his children, and sowing darkness and division broadcast among the saints — the true King is yet to come.”
Know these things clearly, and then you will see why God delays the final glory, and allows things to go on as they do in this world. It is not that He is not able to prevent evil — it is not that He is slack in the fulfilling of His promises — but the Lord is taking out for Himself a people by the preaching of the Gospel. He is longsuffering to unconverted Christians. The Lord is not willing that any should perish — but that all should come to repentance. Once let the number of the elect be gathered out of the world — once let the last elect sinner be brought to repentance — and then the kingdom of Christ shall be set up, and the throne of grace exchanged for the throne of glory.
If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at this topic in our next broadcast/podcast.
Remember the words of the Lord in Matthew 24:42: “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” Matthew 24:44 says, “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”
If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. Here is how:
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…” Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here is the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
